Irene Graven has 27 years of courtroom experience and has spent the last 14 years protecting the people of Tioga County as 1st Assistant District Attorney. She has appeared in all of Tioga County Courts and has prosecuted cases at every level including numerous felonies.

Recently, Irene was named Acting District Attorney of Tioga County by former District Attorney Gerald Keene following his election to County Court Judge last November.

Irene has earned the reputation as a tough prosecutor through her work in the District Attorney’s Office as well her role as Chairperson of the Tioga County Multi-Disciplinary Sex Abuse Review Team and a member of the Tioga County Drug Treatment Court Team. She is respected by her peers and opposing de- fense attorneys not only for her tenacity, but for her high level of integrity and knowl- edge of the law.

During her impressive legal career which includes 21 years of public service, Irene has served as the Town of Owego Attorney and Village of Owego Attorney where she was responsible for the provision of legal services to officers and agents of the Town and Village respectively.

Irene has a record of protecting Tioga County’s most vulnerable citizens, as Attorney for the Child in Tioga County Family Court and as Senior Assistant County Attorney where she was responsible for all aspects of the County’s Family Court matters and Medicaid Resource and Recovery matters.

Irene also has six years of legal experience in private practice as a General Partner at the Bartow and Murphy Law Office where her emphasis was on Real Estate, Trusts and Estates, Not for Profit Corporations and Family Court.

In addition to her extensive legal experience, Irene served as Executive Director of the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation where she administered and monitored the organization’s grant-making activities. The Charitable fund addresses community challenges and has made a significant difference in improving the lives of many in Tioga County.

Irene received her Juris Doctorate from Albany Law School in 1984 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1985. She has a Bachelors of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology and Communications from the State University College at Potsdam where she was named to the President’s list all four years.

She is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Tioga County and Broome County Bar Associations, the New York Prosecutor’s Training Institute and former member of the Council on Foundations.

Irene lives in Owego with her husband Michael and their three children. They are members of St. Patrick Parish in Owego.
